ABOUT

"I'm involved with re-opening the State Theatre is because my husband and I want to take our grandchildren
to the State Theatre to enjoy a movie just like when we were growing up."

- Marcy Bird (Senior Associate - Eide Bailly LLP)

The State Theatre is as important to our ongoing development today as it was in 1926. The March 1, 1926 headline from The Daily Argus Leader was succinct and to the point : Opening of new State Theatre Shows Faith in City. 82 years later, a revitalized downtown Sioux Falls stands at a crossroads. History is poised to repeat itself as a group of energized community leaders and forward-thinking people from across the city, state and country are leading an effort that will help preserve the historical integrity of a city, increase our exposure to the arts and create a state-of-the-art multi-use movie theatre in the heart of South Dakota's largest city. Sioux Falls downtown plan for resurgence, which began twenty years ago and continues today with the evolution of Phillips to the Falls, has created an incredible opportunity for our city and our entire state. In the past two decades, art galleries, boutique shops and outdoor dining and entertainment have complimented a downtown that was saved by members of the public, financial and business communities.

Riding this wave of progress, several developers have successfully restored historic buildings into loft residential condominiums and retail businesses and the results speak for themselves. On any given weekend, downtown thrives as hundreds and even thousands of people gather for dining, conversation, shopping and entertainment. As some people have said, the "vibe" is palpable as you walk up and down Phillips Avenue on a crisp day in Autumn or on a hot August night. Restoring the State Theatre to its original splendor in concert with the construction of a fully digital center for film, complete with ushers and valet parking, will take patrons back to a simpler time where motion pictures provided the ultimate escape from the rigors of the outside world. Just imagine looking down Phillips Avenue in the evening, "under a canopy and basking in a shower of lights from the flashing eyes of powerful electric globes...guests feel the warmth of the State Theatre." (The Daily Argus Leader, 3/1/1926)

The Tunnel

In order for visiting stars to reach the theatre without being harrassed by fans, an underground tunnel was built from an unknown hotel, through downtown, and into the basement of the State Theatre.
